What does your God-posture look like?
Can you believe my back is saying “I’ve had enough?” Yes, I have sciatica! The chiropractor said the cause of the pain is nerve inflammation due to my bad posture. I have been leaning over my computer, hunched back and head tilted forwards for years. This unhealthy posture has caught up with me. So now I am conscientiously trying to correct my posture. Why am I telling you this? First, don’t make the same mistakes I’ve made. Correct your posture now. The chiropractor recommends adults and children type with their fingers on their electronics while they lie on their bellies. We should look like a nerdy cobra, curled with arched back, head up looking forward. We are to read that same way or lie on our sides, anything to keep the spine aligned. For years I had been slouching, laying back lazily on my couch to watch TV or read. That slouch is one of the causes of my pain.As I work on reconstructing my posture, there are a few spiritual lessons I’m discovering. Now I am rolling back my shoulders and thrusting out my chest, avoiding the head-bowed down, “I-feel-ashamed -of-my-chest” position. Now I look straight forward, even upward, with my shoulders pulled back. Try praying in this position. Stand upright, arms at your side. Turn your palms away from your body, and feel your arms rotate outward. This pulls your shoulders back. If you had wings you would be bending them around your back bone. Consciously shift your head back towards your spine and thrust your chin up. Look towards the sky. Pray to God in this posture: “I’m open and receiving you, God. I’m standing or moving forward — boldly — for you.”My spine has been shriveling in on itself because I do not stretch often. Upon reflection, I haven’t stretched spiritually, either. How often do I keep in my comfort zone instead of stretching outward towards others? So now I try to stand tall, proud to be God’s ambassador, aware that my body is His Holy Temple. Imagine the Heavenly Father’s hand pulling a cord right through your spine up into the heavens, a connecting rope between God and you. God is keeping me plumb, not titled off to one side or the other. There will be no physical or spiritual scoliosis for me.What does your posture, both physical and spiritual, look like? Can you give up slouching and align yourself correctly? Can you stretch tall, reaching out to others, instead of collapsing in on yourself? Can you roll your shoulders back and stand erect, head raised and confident in the Lord?Join me: try a better posture from this point forward — for the sake of both your physical and spiritual self. Don’t wait for the pain to set in. Do it today!
