Jesus’s Act of Love (from Matthew 4:18-22)
Jesus’s Act of Love (from Matthew 4:18-22) challenges one’s career path. Here, Jesus met Simon Peter and Andrew, and later James and John, where the men were working as fishermen on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. He offered them a new occupation. “I’ll make you a new kind of fisherman,” he told them. Then he offered to teach them. “I’ll show you how.”
The result of this act of love was the formation of the disciples. These men, by responding to the loving request of Jesus to become fishers of men, fulfilled their destiny. They allowed themselves to be transformed from Galilean fishermen to Apostles, Fishers of the Souls of Men, and the founding fathers of the Church.
The application of this act of love can be found in one’s personal life. God’s love for you and me propels us to career paths that might not be what we expect. His love may expand our current occupation to fit the Kingdom needs, or He may lovingly open up a whole new occupation to better serve Him. In either case, Jesus promises to teach us how to fulfill these careers. “Be my student,” He declares in His love for us.
