Part I: Afraid? Eat Supper with the King of Kings

Listeners have sent me their “fears,”  situations in which they are afraid and want answers. So in this Part One of two Bread Baskets, I review basic ideas about fear, and propose two solutions.  Fear is that nasty emotional feeling we get when we think we face something dangerous.   One way to overcome it is to acknowledge it, write it down, and seek a Scriptural promise that would be an antidote, or provision to overcome that specific fear.

Another way to overcome fear is to do what Ruth did  — to eat a meal with her Kinsman Redeemer.  This short book in the Old Testament shows the beautiful story of a young widow taken care of by a man who by Hebrew law is her Kinsman Redeemer.   He eats with her, talks with her and serves her bread and wine, and fresh water.   At another time in their growing relationship, he calls her a woman of excellence, and promises she does not have to fear, because he will do whatever she asks.

The concept of having a Redeemer is important because that is who Jesus is to each of us.  Jesus redeemed us from the curse by becoming cursed on the cross.  (Gal.3:13.)   The Bible has many verses about our being redeemed.  The Word says we are redeemed from our enemies (Ps. 69:18), our distresses (2 Sam.4:9) , our enslavements (Deut.7:8), and any pit of destruction (Ps. 103:4).  One of the actions that our Redeemer takes on our behalf is to invite us to eat with him.  In Rev. 3:20 Jesus said, “Behold, . . . . if anyone opens [the door] I will come in to him and sup with him and he with me.  Anyone who overcomes I will grant to them to sit down with Me on my throne.”

While it takes faith in the supernatural power of redemption to believe that the Redeemer can and will provide for us, I believe eating a meal with the King of Kings is one solution to the fears we face.

When I eat my dinner

with Christ my Redeemer

peace is the remainder.

Blessings,
