Peace Within
Angels sang at the birth of Christ “Peace on earth.” This refrain echoes even a month later. I hunger for peace, both within me and around me. Certainly, if I can’t experience peace within me, how can I expect the world around me to be at peace? Therefore I have been studying peace. What is peace within me all about? Peace is a gift from God, given by his Holy Spirit. But what does it feel like, look like, sound like? The writings of Andrew Murray have helped with this question. Peace, perfect peace that transcends all our understanding, is the result of complete surrender to God.Jesus is the model of true self-denial. He told us that he can do nothing apart from the Heavenly Father. “I have given myself to the Father to work. I am nothing. My Father is all.” This life of complete submission is a life of perfect peace. In it Jesus trusted the Father utterly. So my experience of peace comes when I submit myself to Christ in me, and wait for God to release whatever he wills through me. Peace is my soul’s place when I empty myself to God. Life is all about him, not about me.
