Wrestling with Un-forgiveness? Watch Jesus pin it!
Un-forgiveness is a toxic emotion that can put a darkness over your soul. But Jesus’s life and death is our model to learn about forgiveness. Not only did Jesus demonstrate how to forgive, but he forgave people who were un-forgivable. Recall that on the day he was crucified he forgave the soldiers who mocked and lashed him, the friends and followers who were in the act of running away, and the centurions who were literally spiking nails into him. Darkness came over the earth for three hours as Jesus experienced the absence of God. At the end, Jesus chose to give up his life for us. He could have called down angels to stop the process but he took it all for us.
You may say, “Well, I’m not Jesus and I can’t possibly forgive so-and-so.” I agree. In your own power forgiveness is close to impossible. But because of the power of the resurrection, that supernatural strength that took death and completely erased it, you can forgive anyone who has wronged you, incl duding yourself. The key: you do the forgiving through the power of the Holy Spirit, not on your own strength. We need to remember the conditions that Jesus taught us about forgiveness: “If you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” (Mat. 6:15.)
